Celestial Buddies Neptune
Celestial Buddies Neptune
Introducing Neptune, the far-out friend who may be cold, but is always up for a cosmic adventure! As the furthest planet from the Sun, Neptune is named for the Roman God of the Sea, but its striking blue hue comes from the methane in its atmosphere. Neptune is so distant that it's invisible to the naked eye, and it was the first planet discovered through mathematical prediction rather than direct observation. Its most defining feature is an active storm system, similar to Jupiter's Red Spot, but Neptune's storm is dark, almost black, and surrounded by white cirrus clouds of frozen methane. With winds reaching up to 1,300 miles per hour, Neptune's weather is the most extreme in the Solar System. Taking 165 Earth years to complete one orbit around the Sun, Neptune's day lasts just 16 Earth hours. Its largest moon, Triton, was discovered shortly after the planet itself, and more recent space missions have revealed a total of at least 14 moons.
